Star Projects #11 RAT RACE

S.T.A.R. Projects Presents:

The

RAT RACE!

LABOR DAY, MONDAY SEPTEMBER 5th.

A SIX HOUR 43 MINUTE ENDURO AT OREGON RACEWAY PARK.

Real race cars, driven by handsome, highly skilled, and well paid drivers may be begrudgingly accepted; however such credentials are certainly not required.

This is the inaugural event to a regional race series being developed by STAR Projects for 2012. It is similar to other “entertainment racing” series that feature $500.00 Rat Trap cars, but is more like club racing, less about theme. Races will be held more often, with fewer (or at least more cleverly disguised) hidden fees.

Local participation is encouraged and special licensing consideration will be given to combine drivers and crop duster pilots.

This event is presented by and under the direction of STAR Projects and all arbitrary and capricious enactments and rules made on the spot will be final.

The Team entry fee for the Labor Day event (one car and includes 4 drivers) is $550.00. Entries must be received before August 1st) thereafter the entry fee increases by $5.00 per day. Entries close August 31st (Late entry fees will be donated to the Sherman County Historical Society). Don’t want to support the museum? Enter on time. (Caution: They are planning a new wing: “Great Snivelers of History”). Crew passes are $10.00 each and available at the gate as well as on line. Additional drivers (over four per car) are $100.00 each. There is no limit on the number of drivers for any one car. Once entered, a driver may register to drive on multiple teams. For this event only 45 entries will be accepted.

Free camping for participants is offered Sunday night, (check gate hours). Because by law the weather will be perfect, a “semi-hosted potluck” barbecue (marinated pork chops) and side dish are provided to registered drivers and crew, Please bring your favorite salad or dessert to share with other teams We will do a track walk after dinner and the “drive-in movie” will begin at dark. Should inclement weather be encountered a Rumba Contest will be held in the Registration Building.

Please be advised: unlike previous STAR Events, entrant’s qualifications have not been scrutinized, you may very well be on course with other drivers of marginal talent and dubious experience, drive defensively.

Cash, Trophies, and “Prizes of unspeakable value” will be awarded to the top three finishers

In each of the two groups!

COME RACE FOR SOME CHEESE.

Registration is now open through www.motorsportsreg.

You still have time to get some buddies together and build a car. From time to time rental rides may be available: if you are a team looking for a car to rent, or a driver who would like to find a team to drive with, or if you are a car owner looking to add a team member.

Contact us and we will do our best to line you up:

Bill Murray. 503-358-2617 or email starprojectsevents@gmail.com.

(We are working on our website and forum, so you guys can do this individually without bothering me. I am busy marinating pork chops)

A random selection of a few of the Rules, Tech Stuff and Good Advice etc. (Most of mine, some of the tracks. others as we go along)

All persons entering O.R.P. are required to sign a release and wear at all times the issued security wrist band. (Yes, on your wrist, either side, your choice).

Use of alcohol (other than for motor fuel) is prohibited on race day until after the conclusion of the days racing events. Any violation may result in the expulsion of the entire team.

Pit and paddock space is tight. To provide room for critical support equipment, please move all nonessential vehicles and motor homes from the paddock areas.

O.R.P. is at 2,500 feet. It can get cool at night. The stars are beautiful. Be prepared to secure all canopies, tarps and tents. The wind can blow hard at O.R.P.

For those that arrive after hours. O.R.P. Provides a large parking area East of the front gate. (If you are sleeping on the ground, the gravel there is guaranteed to be as comfortable as the gravel inside the facility).

92 octane unleaded non-ethanol fuel will be available on site from the track. It is $5.50 / gal. You may bring your own fuel.

Most of the hot pits are on a slight incline; all cars must have at least one wheel chalked during driver changes and especially when fueling.

All spills must be reported immediately to the track staff to avoid damage to the pavement.

Bring what you need. Grass Valley is a town of less than 200 people in a county of less than 1,800 people. (The nearest approximation of a city is The Dalles 50, miles away).

Food vendors will be on site or you can order a box lunch and have it delivered to the track at noon for around $10.00.

There is no running water at the track.

Electrical hook-ups are not available (bring a generator if you need power).

O.R.P. is dog friendly. Pick up after them and keep them on a leash when the track is hot.

O.R.P. uses 100.1 FM to broadcast track announcements. (Bring your boom-box).

Smoking is only allowed east of the pit / pre-grid road barriers.

SPEED LIMIT: Walk speed is the maximum allowed in the hot pits, pre-grid and paddock areas.

Persons under 18 may not ride a bike or use other wheeled devices when the track is hot and must wear a helmet at all other times when on a wheeled device. Skateboards are not allowed.

Prizes will be awarded for both groups (Race Cars and Rat cars). Your group will be assigned following tech.

Penalties for “bone head driving” or other safety violations will result in loss of track time.

Qualifying: there will be a competition to determine the first ten starting positions and will be held prior to dinner Sunday evening. (The Dead Mazda Alternator Toss has been suggested).

TECH & ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

“STAR Projects is all about fun, right after safety.”

Cars must be in race ready condition when presented to tech. There are only two classes and all cars will run in one race group. Race Cars (former and current S.C.C.A. Improved Touring & Conference Production spec cars) and Rat Cars ($500.00 street value before safety modifications) Oval track cars are acceptable but must meet cage and equipment specifications = / > above. (Common, it was algebra class. the one you slept through…. “Equal to or greater than”. Really good cars may receive penalty laps for ostentatious display of squandering money.

Technical requirements for car preparation and safety equipment will be guided by rules of the governing body for the type of car being entered. If you have doubts about your cars roll cage or other safety equipment, Please call for clarification: Bill Murray 503-358-2617 or email starprojectsevents@gmail.com.

No tire restrictions for this event; however cars running on a 190 or softer tread-ware rated tire may be assessed penalty laps at the discretion of the “BIG Cheese” of tech.

All fuel handlers and firemen must wear the same level of gear as the driver. To the greatest extent possible, all fuel will be staged in the hot pits upon arrival. Drivers must be out of the car while fueling. Regardless whether fueling is done in the paddock or hot pits; the engine and electrical shut-off switch must be off, driver out of the car and one crew member in full protective gear, whose sole job is to man the fire extinguisher.

No more than 1 – 5 gallon container of fuel will be over the hot pit wall at any one time. NO fueling Towers allowed.

Tires, engine and under hood fluids may be checked in the hot pits. Any repairs and all engine swaps requiring jacking of the car must be done after car I returned to the paddock area.

All drivers need to present their safety gear for inspection at Registration.

Only vehicles with functioning transponders will be scored (eligible for prizes).

All cars must have numbers that meet the approval of “The Big Cheese of Tech”. If a duplication of number occurs, the first car registered has priority.

To discourage cheating Rats amongst our midst, all cars entered in this event are subject to a claimer rule. Following the days racing an opposing team may purchase a competitors race car. The claimer fee for this event is established at $25,000.00.and both parties are required to contribute $1,000.00 each to the Rat Race prize fund.

This event will be held entirely during daylight hours. Only functioning brake lights are required. Headlights, marker lamps must be taped or removed (Don’t discard them, night racing is coming).

DRIVER ELIGIBILITY:

Current state of provincial driver’s license is required and must be shown at registration.

If your team includes drivers under 18, minor release forms will need to be properly executed (get this done in advance, call for forms).

Teams with one or more drivers who lack racing experience, must display a 6 x 6 inch day-glow orange panel on the front and rear of the vehicle at all times when the car is on track regardless of who is driving. Teams that have one or more members, who have not had prior O.R.P. driving experience, must display the same panels, but will add an “X” across the panel with black electrical tape.

No driver may run more than two hours, and may resume driving only after a half hour rest.

It is the responsibility of all drivers to know the standard racing flags and how and where they are used before they get to the track. Conference standards apply. if you are unsure, a cheat sheet (training guide) is available on request.

Look How Far We Have Come

One of our owners was able to shoot a picture from the air recently of the paddock and Start/Finish area of ORP. What a contrast to the same area shot from the air just 18 months ago!

From just some bare asphalt on an open prairie, we now have a Start/Finish flag stand, Timing & Scoring/Race Control trailer, corner flagging towers, Administration Building, safety fences, tire safety walls, fuel station, and marking paint.

All this progress has been accomplished through the hard work of our Management Team, Track Manager, and the countless hours of many volunteers.

And this is just the beginning! Wait until you see the progress over the next 18 months!
